Alaska
Alaska is a great place to visit. Knowing folks who live there really helps since they can show you the places that are only known to locals and not readily shared with the folks from the lower 48. (That would be almost everyone else from the USA.)
Alaska is commonly known at the Last Frontier. There are so many areas in Alaska that have never been visited by man or so rarely visited by man that they are still as natural as they were 200000 years ago. One can find wild life here that is not used to interaction with humans unlike in so many places to the South.
Alaska is the land of Summer Cruise ships and tons of warm weather visitors. Well, warm by Alaska Standards. The highs in Alaska are usually lower than the lows in Houston during the Summer. How nice that would be. I guess that is one reason Alaska is filled with Texas Exes.
The best time to visit Alaska is the sunny season, which is June through August. The days are long and the temperatures warm. Additionally, most of the tours are operating then. At other times of the year, one may find that many of the tour operators are closed for the Winter Season (late September through early May).
Denali, Anchorage, and Fairbanks are all great places to visit. They are connected by train which makes a tour of all three possible. I recommend using Alaska Railroad since they are the actual operator of the train. You have available on-train guides and plenty of staff to help make the trip more enjoyable. In fact most of the time watching for unusual wild life passes the time.
Eventually I hope to get to Barrow, Alaska. This is the Top of North America. Not only is it the northern most point on the continent, it is the northern most point in the USA. The North Slope is another unique place. This is an area built up almost exclusively for the purpose of extracting oil from beneath the frozen ground. I have heard reports of weather so cold that people were told to stay inside or limit outdoor exposure to a few minutes at a time.
Alaska is one of the most pristine areas I have ever been. Go there and enjoy!
