Casablanca, Morocco
We had a great time in Casablanca. There was not too much to see, but spending time shopping in the markets provided many interesting sites. In particular, we saw an auction that takes place every Sunday. They call it an auction, but it looks more like a very public black market.
While there we spent a lot of time looking for the perfect Morocan rug. Each is handmade and in most cases are made of decent quality wool. There are "traditional" and Berber rugs. We came home with two Berber rugs which are made by the indigenous tribes near to Marakech.
Moroco is a land of contracts with a seaport such as Casablanca and more desert like areas further inland. Casablanca in some ways mirrors a modern city with commerce centers. It has a lot of old world charm with open air markets where bargaining is a way of life. Watch out as they will jack up the price if you are not careful.
One of the worlds largest Muslim Mosques is here. Tours of the mosque are available to non-muslims during certain hours. We spent our time looking for rugs and missed the tours. Our experience was exciting and something we may well try again.
