Honduras
This is a country located in Central America. Unfortunately it is located right in the prime Central American strike zone for hurricanes. In fact two major hurricanes have hit in the last decade wrecking lives and property through that region. Not only have hurricanes struck this part of the world, so have some horrible earthquakes. Despite the natural disasters the folks there are friendly and kind.
The country is extremely poor but is filled with wonderful people. Many have immigrated (legally) to the United States of America. Of those who have come here a large community of immigrants has settled in Houston.
The Island of Roatan (Part of the Bay Islands)
The Bay Islands are best known as some of the best diving available in the Caribbean and by some accounts the world. These islands are located along the second longest barrier reef in the world. The largest is of course the Great Barrier Reef, located in Australia. The reef off these islands is also reached from Belize and is home to numerous dive operations in a few different countries, including numerous live aboard dive boats.
I spent a week at the Co Co View Resort during January. I was there to dive, dive, and dive more. During my seven night stay I make 28 dives which is fewer than some but more than most. This resort is definitely set up with the diver in mind. They cater to divers. Non-divers will love the relaxing atmosphere, however they may find that with so little else to do at the resort they become bored.
Here is my Honduras photo album (Dive Sites and some above water shots). These pictures are from my prints. Those who were there with me probably know that I took tons of slides and had a video made of the final dive day. The video is great and I enjoy relaxing and watching it. My slides have not been printed thus I am not able to scan them up yet. Come back later to see the slides when I get them done.
Roatan is served directly from Houston and a few other gateway cities by Grupo Taca Airlines. Through connecting flights you can take Continental or American to Belize City and hop a small plane for the final hop to the island.
