Morocco
We visited Morocco last Thanksgiving. This was one of our last exotic trips before baby. We really enjoyed this and many other trips we have taken around the world. This was our first trip to Africa, which at the time left me with 5 continents done and two to go. Read about Quito, Ecuador to learn more about continent six.
Anyhow, this was a great trip. We started off by visiting Madrid, Spain and then Lisbon, Portugal. We then took a long weekend to see Casablanca. We flew directly from Lisbon to Casablanca. This was also to be our first long stay in a predominantly Muslim country. We stayed at the Hyatt which is a good international hotel chain.
We arrived at the airport to find what seemed to be a rather arid landscape. This was interesting to us because I expected a bit different landscape right on the Atlantic coast. Yes, Morocco is on the Northwest corner of Africa, on the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. From our hotel, we could look out of the concierge computer room and see one of the largest Mosques in the world. It is built where it juts out over the Atlantic. They even give tours to non-Muslims at certain times. We missed out on the tour which is now a disappointment.
While there I will say I certainly was on guard watching out for our safety. As Americans one certainly sticks out at not being a local. Also, this made some of the bargaining in markets a bit tough. Some of the neat items to buy include rugs, and other handicrafts. Leather also seems popular there.
We ventured through a local market one day where we were clearly out of place. In fact I believe we were the only non-Moroccans there. We got some rude stares and at one point I thought one guy was watching my wife a bit too much so we headed back to the hotel.
Overall Casablanca is a neat city to get a taste of a very different culture. It only requires a few days to see most of what you would want to see there. If you go please enjoy!
