Quito
I traveled to Quito, Ecuador in the Spring. I wanted to go and see the monument on the equator. Not only did I get to see the monument, I also visited a local market which sets up each weekend across from the hotel and even took in a museum about the cultures of the various people who make up Ecuador. All in all, it was a wonderful experience.
While there, I stayed at the Hilton hotel in the area where old and new downtown begin to merge together. The hotel was excellent. The staff and facilities were great. The staff were wonderful about accommodating any requests which I had.
I took a combo tour by which I went to see the historic parts of the city and then we headed out to see the monument at the equator. That was my primary reason for taking the tour. The guide was wonderful speaking fluent English. She had me and one lady from Argentina on the tour with her.
I spent a few hours in the local market in the part across from the hotel. This was quite an experience. I ended up bring back several neat items. Among those items was a pair of sandals made from leather. These sandals are for my baby who will wear them soon. They cost $3 without any bargaining. The price was so good, I did not see any point in bargaining on that item. However on many other items, I ended up paying 50 - 60% of what they initially wanted for the item. The merchants, mostly from the nearby mountains really like if one pays in American currency.
Quito is a very high city. They are near 1.75 miles above sea level. You notice the altitude when trying to take off in the airplane and it seems like you are driving back home before becoming airborne. Be prepared for the altitude sickness many folks get for a day or two. The temperatures are great and during the non-rainy season it is a pleasure to be outdoors. Go and enjoy.
