Washington, D.C.
Washington, DC is a dynamic city where almost anything can happen. I have enjoyed visits there a couple of times at very different points in my life. (Never as a politician.) I really enjoy going to Arlington Cemetery because of the meaning attached to that location. The tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a unique monument to those who never came home from making life here at home a better place.
Washington is not a city that one can visit in a few hours. Even with tickets to many locations it can easily take most of the day just to see the Whitehouse, Capital, and FBI building. (As I child I got a kick from the Machine Gun demonstration at the FBI building.) Those are just three of the sites one should see while there. I recommend spending a couple hours over around the Vietnam Memorial and the surrounding park and monuments. There are so many monuments to see.
The last time there we took a tour on Old Town Trolleys. They provide a good service at a reasonable price. One of the nice features of their service is the hop on and off format of the tour. It is easy for one to start early in the morning and ride around while getting off to go see some of the sites up close. (Last year my wife and her mother took the tour and hated the service.)
The Smithsonian Institute can easily consume several days of time if you really pause to take it all in. That is another of the must see sites in Washington, DC. (The first time I was there, I was young and I am sure my parents wondered why are we doing this?) The Georgetown section of that area is among the other sites one must see.
Contact your Congressperson to obtain special access tickets to certain locations such as the Whitehouse. The tickets are free and typically are available if you ask nicely.
