Scuba Diving

One of my all time favorite sports is Scuba Diving. In fact as a family we enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling to see the beautiful fish and coral formations. We are dive destination experts and can help you plan a great dive vacation.

Scuba Diving Overview

What is Scuba Diving and what makes it a fun sport?

Scuba diving is the sport in which we spend time under water while breathing from a compressed air tank. There are diving scenarios where mixed gas is used instead of just compressed air, but for most divers it is pure air just like we breathe every day, just compressed to a very high pressure. (Similar to the air packs worn by Fire Fighters.)

We go under water typically on a reef to watch fish and coral. We see on many dives other sea life as well which is what makes it a fun sport. There are specialty dives in which we watch unique sea creatures, such as Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, and other large animals that are nice and unique. We also can dive in lava tubes/caves that were created as lava fell into the water off Hawaii's volcanoes. There is pure cave diving in various spots around the world. Shipwreck diving is yet another kind of diving many people enjoy.

Our Favorite Dive Spots

What makes a favorite dive spot?

For me a favorite dive spot is one which supports the life on the reef. That is not human life all over the reef but the fish and coral life that made up the reef long before scuba diving was invented. Yes, these reefs were here a long time before us!

For me a site that is not spoiled by too much diving is among the first criteria. Also, it's important that the dive operators stress respectful diving where divers are not allowed to pick up the marine life, traumatize fish, rub or otherwise touch/hang off the coral. Dive sites with a strong sense of diver safety help themselves make the list.

Favorite dive sites can easily be located in populated easy to dive spots or can be in more remote pristine areas of the world where for various reasons diving on the reefs is very limited.

Among my favorite dive spots are Matangi Island, Fiji; The Great Barrier Reef offshore Cairns, Australia; Roatan, Honduras; The middle and lower Florida Keys; and Kona, Hawaii.
